The different characteristics of ASICs and FPGAs enable their use in different markets - ASICs are used in high-volume, specialized products to minimize design and manufacturing costs as much as possible, resulting in good price / performance ratios. FPGAs are expensive , But is favored by small batch applications due to its programmable flexibility and is often used for prototyping in ASIC designs. Altera’s third generation of structured ASICs, the HardCopy II family, breaks the boundaries of both by providing both FPGA flexibility and standard-cell ASIC performance while meeting cost, performance and time-to-market goals.
