杨氏出自姬姓,来源有二,一支系以国为氏,一支是以邑为氏。西周宣王姬静的小儿子尚父,于周幽王时被封于杨(今山西洪洞县东南),建立杨国,为侯爵(春秋时为晋国所兼并),杨侯的子孙以国为氏,姓杨。此即宋人郑樵《通志·氏族略》所云:“周宣王子尚父,幽王时封为杨侯,为晋所灭,其后为氏焉。”《辞海》云:“扬,石经初刻作‘杨’。”可见古代扬、杨二字通用。晋国灭杨后,将杨地作为晋国公族羊舌肸的采邑。羊舌氏也出自姬姓,晋武公之孙突食邑于羊舌(包括三个县:铜鞮、杨氏、平阳),称为羊舌大夫,其后代以邑为氏而成羊舌氏。突的孙子羊舌肸,字叔向,在晋国任大夫,是当时著名的贤臣。叔向之子伯石,字食我,以封邑为氏,也姓杨,因此又叫杨食我(见《古今姓氏书辨证》)。
