The Paleoproterozoic borate deposits in Liaoning and Jilin provinces are the largest Precambrian borate de posits in the world. The borates were deposited in an evaporitic setting of active continental margin. The volcan ics contained within the borates are enriched in LILE as a result of mantle metasomatism in a subduction zone. The geochemical features of the Liaoning Jilin borate deposits are similar to the Cenozoic ones, all of which are located in subduction collision zones. The boron enrichment in the Paleoproterozoic metamorphic rocks is be lieved to have arisen from the release of fluids during subduction prior to a collision event. Cenozoic analogs to the Liaoning Jilin borates include those in Turkey and the Qinghai Tibet area, which are related to the Alpine and Himalayan collisional orogenies, respectively. We propose that the boron enrichment in ancient mobile belt may be indicative of a subduction/collision related paleotectonic setting.
