This article discusses the Navy’s infrared focal plane array (IRFPA) development plan and several final applications of the infrared focal plane array system. Of particular interest are missile seekers, threat alerts, search and tracking applications. Discuss the advantages of infrared systems as naval sensors and the challenges of developing high performance IR FPA. Emphasis will be placed on the special infrared focal plane array technology being developed recently as part of the Navy’s program. These technologies include hybrid and monolithic arrays. Other technologies are also discussed.
