Objective To investigate the effect of low concentration of heavy water (D2 O) on the longevity and the SOD activity in 10-month-old mice to test the hypothesis that D2O in natural water proposed by Hakh- Westling and Griffiths can cause aging. Methods The mice in experimental group were given free diet of D2 O, mice in control group were drank distilled water to complete the life test and determination of SOD activity in mice with age. Results The low concentration of D2 O had no significant effect on the mean life span of the mice, and there was no significant difference in the activity of SOD between the experimental group and the control group at the same age, but all showed the declining law with age. Conclusion Based on the experimental results, we questioned the hypothesis of the former and confirmed that SOD activity is a better indicator of aging.
