绝对程度副词可以分为客观程度副词和主观程度副词。“太”是一个典型的主观程度副词,其核心语义是对说话人主观参照的“超量”。在多数陈述句中,“太”表示的超量以发话者所能忍受的程度范围为参照,表达其对属性的否定性评价;和以“很”为代表的客观程度副词对属性的描写形成对照。在有些句子中,“太”表示的超量以发话人对属性之高程度的认知经验为参照,表达其对事物属性之高程度的惊异之情,从而使整个句子带上了感叹语气。前一种句子的重音一般落在“太”所修饰的形容词上,而后一种句子的重音一般落在“太”上。
