Microelectrodes were used to record the activity of convergent neurons in the caudal nucleus of the trigeminal nerve in rats. Electrical stimulation of the receptive field centers induced the afferent responses of A and C fibers. The hindlimbs of rats treated with hot water at 48 ℃ could significantly inhibit the afferent response of C neurons in convergent neurons and had obvious inhibitory effect. This effect has been named diffuse nociceptive suppression (DNIC). The acupuncture points “Zusanli” and non-acupuncture points could also significantly inhibit the afferent response of C neurons in the convergent neurons, and the inhibitory effect was more obvious and sustained. Prompted acupuncture analgesia related to DNIC. These effects can be partially antagonized by naloxone.
