《长生殿》决不存在一个“历史主题”或“政治主题”,所谓“乐极哀来”,“垂戒来世”云云,不过是作者故作姿态的理性表白而已,综观作品实际,作者在创作过程中,并不是遵循理性评价的原则,而是遵循情感的、审美的原则和艺术创造的特殊规律。从全剧的整体结构和情志脉络看,作品所要表现的题旨,正是特定背景下主人公的爱情故事及其意义。而我们同时又必须看到,作品中为主人公的爱情故事所安排的社会、政治、历史、民族等诸多背景因素及其给人们的感受,却极大地丰富了全剧的意义内涵,并为作品增添了一层既模糊又具有特殊意义指向的悲剧色彩,从而给人们在品味主人公的爱情故事时,能油然引发出更为深刻的思索,进而在悲剧体验中获得某种启示。这就是《长生殿》提供给我们的认识价值。
