Objective To explore the feasibility of elemental fingerprint analysis for the traceability of marine Chinese oyster origin. Methods Sixteen inorganic elements (Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo and Ni) in 15 oyster samples from 5 sampling sites in Rushan Bay of Shandong Province were determined by ICP- , Pb, Se, Sr and Zn). Based on the results, the elemental fingerprints were constructed. The content of inorganic elements in each oyster sample was studied by principal component analysis and cluster analysis. Results The content of inorganic elements in oyster samples at different sampling points showed obvious regional differences. By means of multivariate analysis, oyster samples at different sampling points could be distinguished. Conclusion The elemental fingerprinting technique combined with multivariate statistical method is an effective method for traceability of oyster origin.
