Biochemical studies have shown that the basic unit of Factor VIII may be a dimer that controls clotting, and in the absence of typical hemophilia. Immunological studies have isolated specific anti-VIIIR:Ag and VIII:CAg antibodies. Clinical and genetic studies reveal that there are at least five genetic variants that affect factor VIII.
