The teaching plan of Yangzhou in 1868, which was typical of many lesson plans in the late Qing Dynasty, reflected the attitudes of all walks of life to the foreign churches in the late Qing era. The lesson plan in Yangzhou is not a demonstration of the public’s misconception of British missionaries by Chinese officials, but a manifestation of action by the Yangzhou gentry and “rule by civilians”. However, the final outcome of punishments and reparations claimed the failure of Yangzhou gentry to expel foreign missionaries. Anti-yaoism similar to the Yangzhou missionary case was not uncommon in the anti-Christian movements of the future.
