InfiniBand was thought to be a universal interconnect technology because of its high bandwidth. People think it will replace the PC and server bus, as a computing cluster interconnect standards for SMP and parallel processing systems can also be used for storage systems. But InfiniBand failed to become a unified interconnect standard for data centers, the complexity of the chips, development delays, porting problems, and costs led InfiniBand to fade away from our vision years ago. But instead of really going away, it eventually came back as a resurrection of a dormant volcano. Recent news shows that some companies, including IBM, have agreed to integrate Topspin’s InfiniBand devices in their production of server and storage products for the high-performance computing and database cluster markets. Perhaps InfiniBand will reshape its position as a mainstream business computing application.
