Political fiction originated in the United Kingdom, its purpose is to spread political views and express political opinions. During the Meiji Restoration in Japan, a large number of British political novels were translated into Japan, which had a profound impact on Japanese society. After the failure of the Reform Movement of 1898 in 1898, Liang Qichao escaped to Japan to escape the CCP’s persecution. During the Japanese exile, Liang Qichao realized that to change China, the “top-down” approach would not work. Only through opening up the people’s wisdom and reforming the people’s thinking would domestic reform be possible. He introduced the concept of “political fiction” into China and attempted to spread his political opinions by expressing his own political will through the establishment of newspapers and periodicals, translating political novels and raising the literary status of fiction. In addition, during the same period a large number of foreign political novels were introduced into China through translation and introduction. Political Fiction This paper attempts to analyze the translation of political novels in the late Qing Dynasty to explore the impact of the translation of political novels on the then Qing society and its own limitations.
