Objective To observe the pathogenicity of the gingival amoebic (Eg) in experimental animals and to understand its pathogenesis and to study the relationship between Eg infection and periodontal disease. Methods Eg strain was isolated from periodontal pocket contents of patients with periodontal disease and cultured. The rats were infected by artificial infection in groups. The pathogenic effects of Eg, symbiotic bacteria (sb) and saline and histopathological changes were observed. Results The incidence of periodontal inflammation in rats in Eg group s, b and saline control groups were 87.50%, 68.75% and 12.50%, respectively, with significant difference (P <0.01). Conclusion Eg infection can lead to the inflammation of gingival tissue when the host immunity is low.
