Palm Beach, CA: Cis-platinum, an anti-cancer drug, can cause severe, long-lasting hearing loss in patients who receive high doses. Charles Gary Wright, MD, from the Callier Center for Infectious Diseases at the University of Texas at the annual meeting of the American Society of Otolaryngology said that although the true incidence of this side effect has not been known so far, hearing always drops when the total dose exceeds 200 mg. The severity of hearing loss usually increases with age, dosage, and frequency of treatment. Wrigt and associate professor Steven D Schaefer examined the temporal bone of five patients treated with cisplatin and subsequently died. They found the drug degenerated cochlear hair cells
