长江是我国淡水鱼类的主要产地之一。长江上游宜昌附近江段是青、鲩、鲢、鳙等主要集中产卵区,是我国江河中规模最大的鱼类产卵场。年产鱼苗约48亿尾(宜昌鱼类繁殖保护站资料,1957),对发展长江流域以及全国的养殖事业具有重大意义。从长江干流的规划看,在三峡至宜宾一带将修建一系列梯级水库,其中规模最大,对国民经济有着很大影响的是三峡枢纽。这一枢纽为三峡的最下一级,坝址位于西陵
