ScienceNews, Vol. 121, No. 2 (1982) L Garmon article published: Researchers report that a synthetic hormone may show contraceptive effectiveness as little as once a month. A small group of women took this chemosynthetic hormone during the first 3 days of menstrual cramps and in all subjects the synthetic hormone prolonged the first time in 2 menstrual cycles and correspondingly shortened another menstrual cycle. In a January 8 issue of Science, University of California doctor Samuel S C Yen and colleagues report that they are unprepared for the second menstrual period with the uterus being treated for egg implantation. The chemical synthesis was first studied in five and then in another 12 women “can prove to be a practical and novel method of contraception.”
