In Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, there have been two cases of collective food poisoning caused by pathogenic Escherichia coli O124: K72: H. The first occurred in September 1963, when 31 village residents ate a group of bean paste (rice dumplings) and caused 17 outbreaks (54.8%). The average incubation period was 17 hours and the symptoms were similar to those of acute gastroenteritis, in which 4 children died as a result of their serious condition. The second occurred in July 1966, with a cumulative incidence of 244 (56.1%) of the 435 in-primary students in a primary school within one week. Suspicious food is a kind of cooked food.
