唐高宗外圆内方、胆大心细,凡他要做的事情,无不达成。没有高宗时代的发展、巩固、铺垫,贞观之治就只是短暂的高潮,开元盛世将成为无源之水。无论用“君主无为”的传统政治思想还是实际达成的事功来衡量,他都是一个成功的皇帝。然而,传世史书却多把他描绘成“软弱无能”的人。这是因为他培养的武则天用“武周”取代了“李唐”。由于后世史家要防范“女皇”的再现,他们宁愿弱智化唐高宗而牺牲历史的真实。
