中国医学科学院血液学研究所宋增璇等于八十年代初研究骨髓基质细胞对造血细胞生长的影响时发现了形态上截然不同的两类基质细胞。1981年宋增璇同志到美国弗吉尼亚大学医学院进修,利用当地条件继续这项研究工作。首先用实验证明了在复杂的基质细胞层中只有一类基质细胞能支持造血细胞的生长,并从小鼠骨髓中分离出一株基质细胞系 TC-1。进一步又从 TC-1细胞系中分离出两个克隆亚系(TC-1-C-11
