Langston Hughes is one of the most influential figures in the history of black literature in the 20th century. In the short story Professor, Hughes portrays a black professor Brown who is respectful and servile in front of whites. This essay will analyze Professor Brown from two perspectives: Professor Brown in the story and Professor Brown outside the story. Based on the story of Professor Brown’s experience, Professor Brown outlined a chain of racial interests in which professors play an important role. His inner conflict has become one of the important clues for the development of the storyline. In addition to the story, as a representative of the black middle class, Professor Brown tried to pursue his own interests at the expense of betraying his own race and being exploited by whites for the real purpose of his apartheid. In addition, his actions doomed him to be abandoned by black ethnicity.
