Research into metaphor has become one of the fastest-growing and important areas of language research over the past twenty years, and metaphor is now recognized as central to language and language use. In this paper, the author briefly reviews the definition of the metaphor, both in broad sense and in narrow sense. And through its understanding mechanism and history, the author finds that modern studies of metaphor should be an autonomous discipline with its own objectives and methods.
