从17世纪开始,西洋钟表传入中国。在整个清王朝(公元1644-1911年),进口钟表多达数万件。在北京故宫博物院的钟表陈列馆里,至今陈列着200件清朝从英国、法国、瑞士、日本进口的钟表。法国前总统逢皮杜、英国女王伊丽莎白二世等访华时都参观过北京故宫的古代进口钟表。 清顺治10年(公元1653年),清世祖得一西洋小自鸣钟,“以验时刻,不离左右”。康熙年间,清圣祖在内府创设自鸣钟处,倡学习西洋钟表轮环、发条等机械原理,并将先祖遗留之废旧钟表“尽行修理,使之皆准”。那时,
