Why do I mention it? It would be easy to suggest thatmusic is just about pleasure, but in reality it is about somuch more. It can be about love: we only have to think of themany pop songs that are about young lovers. Even WilliamShakespeare recognized the role of music in romance when,in his Twelfth Night he wrote: "If music be the food of love, play on!" It can also be about celebration, exemplified finelyby Handel in his coronation anthem Zadok the Priest. As myfriend Wu Wei notes in her article, it can be used to generatemass fervor as represented by some (but sadly not all) na-tional anthems and by many of the songs of football crowds.
