事故树分析是美国贝尔电话实验室1962年提出的，主要用于分析事故的原因和评价事故风险。近年来，随着概率论、图论、集合论和电子计算机的发展，事故树分析得以迅速发展和完善，并应用到设计和生产实践中。我国近年来在许多行业和企业中试用和推广，取得了不少成果，实践证明它实用于我国国民经济各部门各行业的安全生产管理。华北制药厂在推广应用安全评价过程中就事故树分析进行了微机开发，它对安全评价的推广和应用起到了积极的推动作用。
