In the late Qing Dynasty and the late Republic of China, the carving paints market in Beijing was active in the economic, cultural and political center of Beijing. The various social factors such as economic prosperity, cultural change and the change of political power gave Beijing carved lacquer typical characteristics of the times. In particular, the New Deal in the late Qing dynasty, impelled them to move from the imperial court to the private market, from “almost lost” to “bulk” of “export.” This article focuses on the New Deal in the late Qing Dynasty and discusses the development and changes of the carving paint industry in Beijing in this special era.
