英国电影事业的发展,与另外几个大的资本主义国家,如法国、美国、德国的电影事业相此,是大大地迟了一步。常英国本路电影事业正在形成之时(二一十年代),在英国已经有了由主要是发行美国影片的商人组成的、势力雄厚的集团。这个好莱坞的代理机构千方百计地力图阻挠本国艺术电影的产生。在这个团体的支持下,美国的影片发行公司在英国获得了极大的特权,这些特权使得在英国经理好莱坞影片较之组织本国影片生产更为有利。
The development of the British film business has come a long way in the same way as the other major capitalist countries, such as those in France, the United States and Germany. Often when the British film industry was being formed (in the 1920s) there were already powerful groups in the United Kingdom consisting of businessmen who primarily distributed American films. The Hollywood agency tried every means to block the production of its own art films. With the support of this group, the U.S. movie distribution companies gained great prestige in the United Kingdom, which made it more favorable for British managers to produce Hollywood films than to organize their own films.
