One of the biggest obstacles for foreigners to achieve marketing success in Japan is that there are too few foreigners who can communicate in Japanese. Being able to speak Japanese and understand Japanese does not only limit the ability of foreigners to communicate effectively with Japanese people, but also hinders their sales efforts there. In order to successfully sell products in Japan, foreigners must at least have a basic understanding of how the Japanese language—spoken language, written language, multilingualism, and non-verbal communication affect sales relations, negotiation, promotion, product naming and so on.
