An article about mud-in folds (Geology Today Vol.4P.89, 1988) reminds me of the marvelous muddy spring of the Templar’s Firs in Wiltshire near Wootton Bassett. In 1974, the Rivers Authority’s workers cleaned up the Hancock’s Water stream bed. In the little forest called Templar’s Firs, they found the riverbed obstructed by gray clay. As they began digging the clay, a gray, liquid slurry poured into the riverbed from underneath the roots. While the mud spurting 1--8m high into the air, according to the staff said that the rate close to 8L s. At the same time, young saplings near the river began to rock. Mud influx pulses, lots of sticky particles splashing with a lot of solid material, including peat like plant matter, sticks, rocks, fossils, bovine bones and manually sharpened stakes. Wooden items
