Now, the Chemical Abstracts Service (a body of the American Chemical Society) registers more than 600,000 new chemical substances each year, and about 10 million have been recorded. The cumulative total of such recorded chemicals at the end of 1980 was almost 5 million, up from about 1 million more than 20 years ago. Of course, the vast majority of these substances are of academic significance and can not be applied to the actual life outside the laboratory. Even so, it is estimated that 70,000 chemicals are still used in agriculture, consumer products and industry, and this figure is still increasing at an annual rate of about 1,000. These chemicals benefit society in many ways: food and drink, health care, clothing, protective equipment, transport
