在实驗应力分析中,涂漆法是常用的最簡单的方法之一。在零件的表面涂上一层薄薄的脆性漆,当零件受力时,漆层上即出現裂紋,用它研究零件最大应力的区域和确定主变形方向最为有效,同时也可估計应力的大小。涂漆法下适用于在液体中工作的零件的应力分析。以松香、氢氧化鋇为主要原料,以二硫化碳为溶剂的脆性漆常在下列范围内应用:溫度8℃—35℃,湿度到90%,被研究的零件其弹性变形不应小于3·10~(-2)%,
