U.S. business travelers in Europe today can make international calls directly from hotels or overseas companies, or use the “direct dial service” provided by Inter-American Telecommunications. Both of these alternative means of communication have inherent problems. When using direct dialing, you often encounter call contention and transmission quality issues. On the other hand, even the best-service operators have language barriers to help with the call. Telephone rates are always much higher than in the United States because of the high telephone rates in Europe and the inability of travelers to estimate the cost of using the telephone system. And the extra cost of the hotel is 8 to 10 times that of public telephone companies.
