The 12 counties (cities) in Dali Prefecture are all historical malaria endemic areas. After years of anti-malarial work, the average annual incidence rate dropped from 79.66 in the 1950s to 0.94 in the 1980s. A total of 135 endogenous cases were found in 1988-1992. 723 cases were imported, accounting for 84.3%.
