The main works of Virginia Woolf all show the concern and anxiety about the crisis of interpersonal relations in modern society, expressing the author’s longing for the realization of “connection” between people and people. As a traditional rebel, Woolf has an irreconcilable inner contradiction in his life and art: one is opposed to the vulgarity and hypocrisy of traditional Victorian society, and is deeply attracted by it. While insisting on using the private narrative technique, One side, however, is unable to solve the contradiction between this approach and the one that transcends one’s “connection”. In order to resolve these inner contradictions, Woolf created the images of “the hostess” and “the female artist.” Both of them have different lifestyles, but they are no different from the pursuit of “connection” The former part of the process from misunderstanding to understanding, but also partly reflects the author’s own mentality.
