我带着许许多多的思考去法国和意大利考察美术的历史和现状,也带着许许多多的思考归来。一个月的时间是在紧张、激动的状态中度过的,过得是那样地快,以至于对所见所闻来不及咀嚼和消化,因而思考就很难说是深入的。我出发前考虑得最多的是:我们的美术要往哪个方向发展?我们要走什么样的路?东方和西方,过去和现在,传统和革新,写实与抽象……它们之间的关系如何处理?我回来时,头脑里仍然装着这些问题。回来后,许多同志,包括从事美术领导和创作的老同志和一些刚刚踏入美术领域的青年朋友,和我讨论的也是这些问题。
With so many thoughts, I went to France and Italy to examine the history and current status of art and returned with so many thoughts. A month’s time spent in a state of tension and excitement was so fast that it was too late to chew and digest what was seen and heard, so it was hard to think deeply. What is the most important thing to consider before I leave? In which direction are our art going? What kind of way are we going to do? East and West, Past and Present, Tradition and Innovation, Realism and Abstraction ... How do they relate to each other? I still have these problems in my head when I come back. After returning, many comrades, including old comrades engaged in art leadership and creation, as well as some young friends who have just stepped into the field of art, talked with me about these issues.
