As part of his doctoral dissertation (M Matthias. 1991), during 1987-1988 the author studied ways in which professionals evaluated and maintained their ability to work at different stages of their careers. The study sparked 59 respondents from the engineering, pharmacy and medical communities responding to questions about understanding and assessing their ability to continue working. The conclusions of the study show great differences in how professionals understand their continued ability to work and how they can be kept pace with the trends of the times. The conclusion of this study is of great significance to the establishment of adult education practice and theory. The authors are convinced that engineers are now more in need than ever before to take control of their careers and areas of expertise. Although supervision and management play a key role, engineers have the ultimate responsibility for the scope, planning and implementation of their professional development.
