在一条积满尘土的荒僻的大路上,一个风尘仆仆、形容枯槁的远方旅人正向路边的老瘸子打听去暗塔的路。他不是第一个打听这条路的人,前面已有不少人——他的伙伴——踏上了找暗塔的路,但没有一个活着回来。他们为什么要找暗塔?没有人知道。这个人——亚瑟王的儿子罗兰公子是个骑土,但是他没有骑马,而是徒步作长途旅行。他为了寻找暗塔,已经在全世界流浪了许多年,他已精疲力尽,意志颓丧,连自己是否够条件像前面的伙伴那样失败,都怀疑起来。但他还是继续寻找,不肯半途而废。
