俄罗斯终身院士、航空发动机专家法沃尔斯基曾说:所有飞行器上的东西,都是提高阻力增加重量的,唯独发动机是提高动力的。保密工作在保障中,也努力在促进动力提高的前提下伴飞。创建于1961年8月的中航工业沈阳发动机设计研究所(以下简称动力所),是新中国第一个航空发动机设计研究所,是国家大中型航空发动机和燃气轮机研发的总体设计单位。经过40余年奋力赶超,动力所与国际领先水平的差距大大缩短。2005年,由动力所研制的“太行”大推力涡扇发动机正式定型,目前已经批量装备我军三代战机。其核心技术正处在大爆发、大突破的前夜。
