Using an isolated 4-20mA transmitter (such as the Burr-Brown IXR100 product) provides a simple and complete remote test system that often has a built-in μP (microprocessor). If the remote system still needs to report on its full operational status, it would be difficult to provide a simulation of the process under test with one line. The simple monitor circuit shown in Figure 1 allows the same circuitry to provide additional information about system operation by closing or breaking a 4-20 mA loop. A major advantage of this circuit is that it is completely isolated from the host system so that Avoid unnecessary ground loops and other potential damage.
