我国古代的短篇小说,无论是文言的还是白话的,都是卷帙浩繁,佳作不乏的。比较而言,明代同宋代一样,白话短篇小说的成就更高。这是由于说唱文学的空前繁荣,而且由于它已然成为了明代市民们最喜爱的娱乐的缘故。由此,也就造成了起源于民间说唱文学的白话小说与文言小说的极大不同。应该说,小说之“用”是在白话小说兴起后才得到充分体现的。当时小说的艺术特征主要表现为以下三个方面:(一)小说中有生动的人物;(二)小说中有生动的故事情节;(三)其效果与意义主要是娱
