“礼”在苟子那里有两类意义:一类是礼义,指道德原则,“达爱敬之文,而滋成行义之美者也”(《荀子·礼论》)。另一类是礼法,指宗法等级制度,使“贵贱有等,长幼有差,贫富轻重皆有称者也”(《苟子·富国》),这里的礼法便具有了最高准则的意义。而“法”在荀子思想中始终是作为规则的意义使用的。在荀子思想中,“礼法”第一次作为一个字词而使用,非荀子任意为之,也非偶然。它是在孔孟基础上,将礼做进一步外推,借用“义”“类”等
