Paleographic studies showed that (kong) and (zi) was the same charcter at the beginning. The character came from through the way of “borrowing the form and changing the body” and indicated “fine” or “glorious” of in the Western Zhou period when it just appeared. In the early Spring and Autunm period, a descendant of the Shang people, Kongfujia used his first name kongfu or kong as his surname and became the founder of the Kong clan and had close relation with the original zi clan. According to its usage in paleographic materials, it is known that zi was pronounced as (hao) or (kong) at the end of the Shang Dynasty and the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty.
