《北史·薛辩传》在《魏书·薛辩传》基础上,增加了其父亲薛强的大量事迹。此外《北史·薛修义传》相比《北齐书·薛修义传》也增加了不少内容。但这些增加的内容,《资治通鉴》没有采用。此外,据薛元超墓志和薛修义墓志来判断,这些增加的内容可信度不高,基本上是为了掩饰河东薛氏来自蜀人的痕迹。
