1987年5月7日大兴安岭林区火灾发生后,中国科学院遥感卫星地面站,为了密切监测火情,为灭火领导小组的指挥与决策提供准确的有价值的资料,立即与美国陆地卫星控制中心联系,除白天正常接收外并要求增发13日、20日、22日等夜间经过该地区上空的热红外探测数据。5月13日该站首次成功地接收并处理出火灾发生后第一次经过该地区的数据,获得了东西两个火区的形势与位置分布图、火头的准确座标及火区的等密度分割图,有力地配合了救灾指挥的工作。
