痔疮、肛裂、肛瘘、直肠脱垂是常见的多发病。据一些省市的调查,仅痔疮在成人中的发病率就占53％。祖国医学治疗痔瘘等常见病有悠久的历史。早在两千年左右,《内经》、《神农本草经》就有痔、痔瘘、脱肛(直肠脱垂)的病名及病因和多种治疗药物的记载。在唐宋时代治疗痔疮、肛裂、肛瘘、直肠脱垂的较完整的治疗方法已经形成。明清时代其疗法更为系统。仅《图书集成》就记载了“枯痔法”、“挂线法”、“结扎法”、“脱管法”、“外洗法”、“针刺法”、“导引法”
