The use of various composite materials in armored combat vehicle structures offers several potential benefits, including reducing the overall weight of the vehicle by combining the anti-stripping liner with the composite structure, the overall “stealth” protection and the reduction of acoustic signals. Also, the weight saved increases the survivability of the vehicle either by increasing ballistic protection and / or increasing the mobility of the vehicle. To take full advantage of these potential advantages, Defense Identification and Research Agency (DERA) and the UK Department of Industry have formed a joint-venture body company to produce Europe's first full-scale armored combat vehicle demonstration car known as Advanced Composite Armored Vehicle Platform (ACAVP), which is currently undergoing testing. This article describes the application of various composite materials for armored combat vehicles, identifies potential areas where these materials will be used in armored combat vehicles and details the materials used to make the ACAVP demo car and Processing procedures.
