在汽轮机的运行事故记录中,由于没有转子轴向位移保护装置,当转子轴向移动过大时,造成推力轴瓦烧毁和汽轮机动静部分摩擦的事故是并不鲜见的。为了提高旧式汽轮机的安全运行,加装轴向位移保护装置还是必要的。很显然,增加任何设备都应该服从经济、简单、准确和可靠等原则。苏联斯大林金属工厂出品的高压汽轮机所采用的电气式轴向位移保护装置,由于要求具备一系列的技术条件,因此定在旧式汽轮机上广泛采用,就会受到限制。
