Methionine is one of important amino acids necessary for the protein synthesis of livestock and poultry. It is usually added into poultry feed, and its content in poultry feed is generally 0.05% to 0.2%. Currently, the major types of feed-grade methionine are DL-methionine (99% solid), DL-methionine hydroxy analogue (MHA, 88% liquid) and its calcium salt (MHACa), metal methionine complexes and protective methionine preparations for ruminant animals. DL-methionine is synthesized with methyl mercaptan and acrolein that is made by the oxidation of propylene.
