Alice Murdoch specializes in shaping the image of middle-class British intellectuals. Her “no-nonsense failure” in the 1970s sketched out the autistic and blind lives of the contemporary Western middle class in sharp, realistic brush strokes, and showed deep concern about individual sin behavior and sense of guilt. The novel projected the self-righteous mode of thinking of the moral subject to the external world full of chance factors, and thoroughly analyzed and judged the “solipsism” prevailing in western society in the 20th century. Murdoch reintroduced the evil aspect of human nature into the negative anti-sin consciousness in western society so that readers can feel the moral wisdom contained in his works in the immersive reading process. This rational exposition leads people to imagine, think and recognize the evil form of human nature in the vast space of literary works.
