Recently, the National Science Foundation (NSF) held a symposium inviting a team of internationally recognized tribologists from academia, the US federal laboratories and the private industry. Discuss and suggest the future direction of tribological basic research. The seminar was followed by the Tribology Conference of the American Society of Lubrication Engineers (ASME), Tribology Conference, Pittsburgh, PA (October 20-22, 1986), where representatives from the private industry were invited Evaluate the experts’ suggestions and suggest the research needs of their respective industries. Among the many research topics discussed, four areas of special emphasis need immediate attention. They are: ① Prediction models of friction, wear and tear; ② Microscopic and chemical views of lubrication; ③ Mechanism and prevention of wear on the micro level; ④ Materials and lubricants for high temperature applications. It is noticed that many of these areas are extremely complex and may benefit from collaboration between the multidisciplinary teams of universities, federal laboratories and the private sector. The participants expressed the view that there is a great need to pass on basic research to industrial users.
